February 2016 Update

Much has happened since I posted last spring. The biggest news, is my wife and I were blessed with a son on July, 11 2015. His name is Copper Ray and he is so awesome!

Welcome to the planet, Copper!

Welcome to the planet, Copper!

He’s already very musical! It might run in the family.

Yeah, that's right. I gots some chops!

Here we are seven months later and he’s growing way too fast! So, as you can guess, we’ve had our hands quite full this last year.

So handsome!

Speaking of hands, or in this case, shoulders (they are connected I guess) I had to undergo a complete replacement of my left shoulder in November. I have been experiencing chronic pain due to osteoarthritis in both shoulders for years. The left, however, was far worse than the right. So, I got a new one!

New Left Shoulder

I took three and a half months off work to recover and rehabilitate. All is well on the mend. I started back to work February 11.

One of the new hobbies/obsessions I have gotten into since my son’s birth, is building cigar box instruments. It all began with a box of cigars I bought to celebrate his birth. One of the unique features I built into that particular instrument was, I put a copy of his birth certificate on the inside so in can be viewed through the sound hole. Neat-o! Sounds pretty good too!

Here’s the second one I built. I began this one before the shoulder surgery and finished it up after. I think it looks pretty good and has good volume but, the intonation is off. It was still a really fun build.

Now, I have around 10-15 cigar boxes laying around the house waiting to be made musical! I’m waiting until I acquire more tools. I already got a compound mitre saw. My brother got me a table saw for Christmas. Thanks Tim! Now, I need a drill press and most of all, a new work bench. It’ll all take time but it’ll get there. Part of the fun is getting all the stuff together.

Another thing I started doing while I was off work and recuperating, I began taking piano lessons. This has always been a dream of mine. I’m feeling emotional about it even as I write this.

A friend of ours moved out of state and didn’t want to have to move her piano. She sold it to us for a smoking deal. It was just sitting there and I couldn’t take it!. I’m three lessons in and I absolutely love it! Thank you Tami!

I’ve also replaced my old 48 key midi controller with a full 88 key model so I can get the full effect when and if (sigh) I ever start recording again.

Well, that’s should about cover everything up to now. It’s been a very full year and we have all been extremely blessed. I look forward to this year and all the good that will come during it.

Back at it…

After many years in hiatus, I have put together a mini personal studio. This is nowhere near its prior iteration. Before I met my wife, and we moved in together, I was running a 36 channel studio out of my bedroom. I still have all the equipment but, no need for all that any more. This one is a much more modest 4 channel. I won’t be recording drums here so, no need for more than that.
Having said all that, I did it because I have a project in mind. At this stage, it is all extremely grandiose. We’ll see. It’s been a super long time and I may be a little rusty. We have the baby on the way and I find Dave time becoming more and more fleeting. Wish me luck!

SUCCESS! Thanks to my friend, Jeff, we got all the photos pulled in from my SmugMug account. Videos are also now actually present on the videos page!

After all this time, Vegetable Sandwich is beginning to actually have all its pieces and parts put together. Organizing is really all that’s left to do.

Thank you for visiting!

The beat goes on

Been so long since I’ve updated anything on this site! A few things I’ve been wanting to do…

1. Either convert the photography to HTML5 or figure out a way to link directly to my SmugMug account. The latter is the way I’m leaning because it would allow me to use their server space and just upload photos to one place.

2. Link or figure out how to embed my YouTube videos to the video section of the web site.

3. WRITE AND RECORD MORE MUSIC! This should actually be priority number one.

Life has been extremely busy and full. I got married June 26, 2014 to a wonderful woman and her 2 awesome kids. We just bought a new, bigger house because we are expecting a baby boy in July 2015!

And the beat goes on!

HTML5! That’s right. No more Flash. What does that mean? It means that all the music on this sight can be played on any device! Have an iPhone or an iPad? No problem. HTML5 doesn’t care! Plus, I think the players themselves look a LOT better. The players offer more functionality as well. Want to listen while you continue browsing elsewhere? No problem. The HTML5 players have a “pop-out” button that opens them up in their own window. There is also a clearly marked “download” button to for those that wish to download and keep the tunes. Pretty exciting stuff!

Making progress

Figured out a way to have a player that plays the whole album and still allows downloads today. Wish I could figure out how to position the different elements to be where I want. I’d like the player to be positioned to the right of the album art. I’m sure it’s something goofy. I’ll figure it out.

Meanwhile, if you’re interested in downloading one of my songs, just click on the little triangle icon in the player to the right of the song you’d like to download. Easy!

One of the things about a WordPress based web site are all the plug-ins available to make various things happen. It’s been quite overwhelming. As soon as I get the Music page set up the way I want, I’ll begin work on the Photography page and so on. There’s about a gagillion photo and slide-show plug-ins. I’ll need to find one I like so, there will be some experimenting going on with that when I get to it.
